Recreational Therapists provide treatment services and recreation activities for clients with disabilities or illnesses. Using a variety of activities including arts and crafts, animals contact, sports, games, dance and movement. The Recreational Therapist's job is to improve and maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of their clients. Recreational Therapists help clients reduce depression, stress, and anxiety, assist in recovering basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities, build confidence and socialisation.

Recreational Therapist jobs include treating and rehabilitating clients with specific health conditions, usually in working with physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, and physical and occupational therapists.

Recreational Therapists assess clients using information from observations, medical records, standardised assessments, the medical staff, the clients’ families, and the clients themselves. They then develop and implement therapeutic plans suited to the clients’ needs and interests. Recreational Therapists instruct patients in relaxation techniques to reduce stress and tension, stretching and limbering exercises, proper body mechanics for participation in recreational activities, pacing and energy conservation techniques, and team activities.

Recreational Therapists may work in parks and recreation departments, special-education programs for school districts, or assisted-living, adult day care, and substance abuse rehabilitation centres.
