Orthoptists diagnose and treat disorders of the eye, relating to impaired vision and eye movement.

Orthoptist jobs may include:

  • measuring and assessing visual acuity and prescribe glasses when required
  • monitoring and assisting treatment of eye disorders such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration
  • measuring and selecting intraocular lenses for cataract surgery
  • detecting and managing eye movement disorders, and their sensory consequences
  • conducting diagnostic and imaging techniques to determine the effects and progression of eye disease
  • developing strategies for patients with neurological disorders
  • developing rehabilitation for impaired vision to maximise an patient's remaining vision
  • reporting on eye defects for practitioners and therapists, and to relevant authorities, such as transport authorities
  • providing information to patients, families and the community about eye conditions and their effects
  • conducting vision screening tests and promote preventative eye health care

Orthoptists may specialise in:

  • opththalmic eye care providing treatment of eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and cataracts
  • neuro-opththamology providing treatment of neurologically-based eye disorders
  • eye movement disorders and paediatric eye conditions
  • vision rehabilitation maximising sight in individuals with low vision
  • education or research
