A Farmer operates farms, ranches, greenhouses, nurseries or other agricultural production properties. A Farmer produces food crops, horticultural specialties, livestock, poultry, finfish, shellfish, or animal specialties. A Farmer’s job may include planting, cultivating, harvesting, post-harvest packaging and preparation and, transporting to market both crops and livestock.

A Farmer is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising farm workers or farm labor contractors. It is a Farmers responsibility to manage farm finance matters such as preparing costings, and keeping production and other records. A Farmer is also responsible for the maintenance and operation of specialist farming machinery and equipment. A Farmer must be physically fit in order to perform the ongoing physical work involved in farming.

A Farmer must evaluate their product market, then promote and market farm products, acting as the sales agent for livestock and crops, negotiating with buyers for the sale, storage, and shipment of crops.
