Signwriter Job Profile in Australia
A Signwriter designs, manufactures and paints signs for multiple purposes, including advertising display, buildings, boats, vehicles and structures.

A Signwriter works indoors and outdoors and is commonly required to scale ladders and scaffolding. Their typical duties include:

  • discussing requirements with clients
  • creating mock-ups for approval
  • selecting suitable materials for sign manufacture (ie. timber, plastic, metal or glass)
  • preparing materials via sanding, cleaning or polishing
  • applying oil, paint, enamel or varnish according to design requirements
  • using computerised machinery to create 2D or 3D lettering and graphics
  • designing wall murals, screen prints and custom-vehicle art

A Signwriter requires excellent eyesight, spelling and design skills. Generally, a Signwriter gains entry into the industry via an Apprenticeship or Traineeship.
